the downside about rope guards

June 30th, 2009

100_2681100_2682

Some companies stand by the rope guard (shaft protector) and others want nothing to do with them. I can say that I have seen cases where a diver would have been able to free up a vessel if not for the rope guard, however who is to say how many times that the very same rope guard has saved that vessel.  I do not feel that I am qualified to bost my opinion and pass it off as fact, so I will share the latest story about the rope guard allowing you to form your own opinion.  A diver was sent out to remove 60 feet of 2 inch cable from a Kort Nozzle.  The diver made multiple cuts and removed cable from around the flukes, shaft and interior nozzle.  Diver had captain run vessel after job was complete and performed a final inspection to find no cable remaining.  One month later when vessel was dry docked you can clearly see where cable was trapped and had expanded with enough force to crack open half of the rope guard.  This is something the diver could not feel at the time the rope guard was intact and would not have been able to remove even if he had known it was there.  I ask you to take a close look at these two pictures and decide for yourself.
